If the Brotherhood cannot meet as a group, what is its purpose?
Some students may think it indeed has no purpose; others may believe, as Winston seems to, that it is a way of showing resistance to the Party's hegemony, that it ensures that there are elements of society and thought that the Party cannot control. It is also possible, on a more practical level, that the Brotherhood will one day be able to meet as a group, after the rebellion is accomplished.
