Why does Karanja fear the Thompson's leaving Kenya?

Karanja views Thompson as a symbol of whiteman's power, "unmovable like a rock." It was this power that transformed Kenya in sixty years, from wild bush into modern cities, complete with trains, airplanes, and skyscrapers. Karanja had a taste of this power himself, when he was Chief and "could make circumcised men cower before him, women scream by a lift of his finger." With Thompson leaving, this power source that Karanja has tied himself to, is leaving him behind.
