The character of an individual is demonstrated by the way they handle power Generally, power is referred to the possession/ ability of control or influence over others, which is, in fact, subject to one’s characteristics. This assumption is both depicted in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813), and Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own (1929). Both texts showcase that power is a complex phenomenon that reflects, the character of an individual, which is demonstrated by their use of power. Austen characterizes Elizabeth as a determined woman whose strong sense of self is revealed by her exercise of personal power. Comparatively, Lady Catherine’s arrogant but fearful character is revealed through her manipulation of societal power. Similarly, Woolf states that the artistic capacity of an individual is showcased when they exercise their intellectual power. Their intellectual power is an encompassment of knowledge and imagination. In addition, by highlighting the mistreatment of women as writers, Woolf displays a woman's determined willpower where she refutes the belief that women are the lesser gender.
