    Structure:

    In A Thousand Splendid Suns, many of the characters drastically change their opinions of others. Mariam resents Laila at first, but comes to love her as a daughter. Rasheed treats Laila as his malika, but comes to hate her violently. Laila sees Tariq as a friend and brother, but comes to love him passionately. As the story takes place over many years, characters experience significant changes in their relationships.
