A Valediction: Of Weeping Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

A Valediction: Of Weeping Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Valediction

Valediction is an act of farewell and the poem is about a teary farewell between two lovers. It is about grief and acceptance that this is the end of their story. The tears shed between them are only a proof of the finality of their farewell.

Sea and wind

Forces of nature are personified and the unpredictability that they pose are brought into connection with grief. Too much grief might serve as a bad omen; too much weeping for a loved one at a time of separation might only bring about tragedy. The poet's message is that of learning to let go, even if it's too painful.

Round ball

Simplification of the world before meaning was given to it, and as a result of which it became everything brings forth a discussion beyond the simple story portrayed in the poem. It is a discussion of connection between the world around us and the meanings that make the objects, occurrences, moments significant.
