A Vigilante Themes

Justice

This is the main theme running throughout the course of the movie. Injustice has been something that’s Sadie has experienced at the hands of her husband and this is what drives her to fight for others in a similar situation as herself. She clearly believes that one must make their own justice since justice is not something that the world will provide – a key example being the death of her son at the hands of her husband. She seeks to correct her own injustice by aiding others, but this is never truly enough. Ultimately, she gets her justice when she kills her husband in the end as she is now truly free from him.

Female empowerment

This movie is a rarity in itself as it casts a female in a role usually prescribed to men. Sadie transforms from being a meek housewife to a deadly warrior after leaving her husband. Perhaps this is a reference to the world that patriarchy stands in the success of females. Moreover, by casting her in the role of vigilante, it opens up the doors to the female audience that they can take matters into their own hands and not passively stand by and let men take control.
