"A Wagner Matinée" is very much a piece with Cather's well-known novels, including O Pioneers!, A Lost Lady, and My Ántonia. Cather's oeuvre explores the significance of white people's lives on the American frontier and the visceral elements of that experience—that is, experiences like Aunt Georgiana's. Other important books about frontier life, including the wars of conquest white settlers undertook against Native Americans, include The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper, American Indian Stories by Zitkála-Ša, and Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.
