Otori Takeo (Tomasu)
Born Tomasu as a member of the Hidden, his name is later changed to Takeo. His name is changed by Lord Shigeru of the Otori after Shigeru rescues Takeo following the ambush of his village. Tomasu is the son of Kikuta Isamu and then later becomes the nephew and adopted son of Otori Shigeru. Being adopted by Otori Shigeru makes Takeo the legal heir to the Otori clan. Takeo has some powers including stronger than normal hearing and invisibility.
Otori Shigeru
As the leader of the Otori tribe, he keeps and saves records about the tribe. Otori Shigeru rescues Takeo and brings him to meet Maruyama Naomi, a ruler from Seishuu and strongly opposed to the persecution of the Hidden. Otori Shigeru and Lady Maruyama later express their love to each other. Shigeru is a man of conflicts, he is very honourable but he is also a man of revenge. He greatly prides his sword, Jato.
Shirakawa Kaede
Shirakawa Kaede is the heir to Maruyama following the deaths of Lady Maruyama and Maruyama Mariko. She is cousins with her protector Maruyama Naomi and has two younger sisters, Ai and Hana. Besides Maruyama Naomi, she is also accompanied by Shikuza, Kenji's niece who is half Muto and half Kikuta. Kaede has been held captive by the Noguchi since she was seven and has often been harassed by guards who have wanted to sleep with her, some of whom have even attempted to rape her. She is wary of men due to her experiences but soon forges a strong bond with Otori Takeo based on his kindness.
Lida Sadamu
Iida Sadamu is the leader of the Tohan clan and the arch-enemy of Otori Shigeru. His rulership is dictated by his ruthlessness and lack of morality. These attributes can further be seen in the way he apathetically murders people or his treatment of Kaede. Iida is responsible for Shigeru's death and is eventually killed by Kaede.
Maruyama Naomi
Maruyama Naomi is the powerful leader of Maruyama and maintains a secret relationship with Otori Shigeru. Her and her daughter Mariko are killed together.
Muto Kenji
Muto Kenji is the master of the Muto Tribe Family. He takes Otori Takeo under his wing after he is adopted by Shigeru and becomes his mentor in Hagi. He is the father of Muto Yuki and the uncle of Muto Shizuka.
