Alice in Wonderland (2010 film) Character List

Alice

Alice is the protagonist of the film. After losing her father, her most trusted confidant and supporter, Alice feels at odds with the rigid conformism of her world. This all comes to a head when she is pressured into marrying the awkward Hamish at a garden party. Overwhelmed with the expectations of society, she follows the white rabbit down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. While her adult life has led her to believe that Wonderland is only a dream, she soon realizes that it is, in fact, very real, and as she discovers this, she becomes braver and more sure of herself. Alice is imaginative and non-conforming, resentful of doing things just because they are expected of her. A serious and intuitive young woman, she has bigger plans than just doing what is expected of her, and her time in Wonderland helps her gain self-confidence, and leads her to follow in her father's footsteps and become an imperial entrepreneur.

Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter lives in Wonderland, and is a character whose emotions are close to the surface. He has vibrant hair, nails, and eyes and is quite strange, regarded by everyone as being quite "mad" and a little off-kilter. In spite of his eccentricities, he is a noble and loyal friend to Alice and a major leader of the resistance against the Red Queen. He often wears a toothy smile, and an expression of insanity, and he loves nothing more than making hats, and performing his famed jig, the Futterwacken.

Red Queen

The Red Queen is the antagonist of the film. She is set on taking over all of Wonderland for herself, and she is a mercurial and unjust ruler, sentencing anyone who steps out of line to death. A fascistic monarch, she is as easily influenced by flattery as she is angered by disobedience. She makes animals her slaves and servants, and she even beheaded her husband, jealous of his interest in her perfect sister, the White Queen. An overgrown child, the Red Queen is known for having an unusually large head, both literally and figuratively.

White Queen

The White Queen is a good and just ruler, benevolent and sweet in contrast to the Red Queen's violent and changeable temperament. The White Queen is kind to the animals and rules fairly, vowing never to cause harm to any living thing. She is beautiful and benevolent, but also—like many citizens of Wonderland—a little eccentric.

The White Rabbit

The White Rabbit is an anxious character who likes being on time, although he always seems to be late, contributing to his irritability with the other characters. The rabbit works for the Red Queen but is also secretly part of the resistance to her rule. He is the one who brings Alice into Wonderland after the Hatter orders him to.

Hamish

Hamish is the priggish and uptight boy who proposes to Alice at the garden party at the beginning of the film. He is awkward and seems to have no interest in Alice beyond the fact that a marriage to her would be favorable in the eyes of society.
