Alice Walker: Poetry Quotes

Quotes

‘There it lies/Green/& whole/with a luscious/red/heart of its own’

The narrator, What it feels like

In the poem entitled "What it feels like’’, the narrator describes a feeling that remains unknown. The narrator describes the feeling in very descriptive terms, and compares it with a watermelon that she swallowed and which lodged itself in the place where her heart used to be. The watermelon became a heart in time, with a red center and surrounded by a green outer layer. This description suggests that the author heart was replaced by this feeling that in time grew the ability to behave just like a normal heart would and to end up controlling the author’s life.

‘Expect nothing. Live frugally/On surprise./become a stranger’

The narrator, Expect Nothing

In the poem ‘"Expect Nothing’’ the narrator presents her own point of view regarding the way in which a person should live his or her life. The author gives a series of advices to the reader and the most important one is to "Expect nothing’’ and "Live frugally’’. These two items of advice are mentioned twice in the poem, thus transmitting the idea that they are more important than the rest of the advices mentioned. Through this, the author urges her readers to live in such a manner as to always be ready for everything that life throws at them and also to live without planning their lives in advance.

‘I want to stick my toe/& soon my whole body/into the water.’

‘I want to stick my toe/& soon my whole body/into the water.’

The quote from above is taken from the poem entitled "Desire," in which the narrator talks about her attitude towards temptations in life. The quote from above highlights how the narrator feels powerless when faced with her own desires and how even though sometimes she only wants a little taste of the thing tempting her, she usually ends up submerging herself in that said desire, that is she finds herself overpowered and feeling as if she has no control over herself and her actions whatsoever.
