Alicia: My Story is the autobiographical account of Alicia Appleman-Jurman, a Polish-born Israeli–American writer who wrote about her experiences in enduring the Holocaust. The autobiography was published in Toronto and New York by Bantam in 1988.
Alicia speaks about the struggles and difficult ordeals she had to endure during this period of persecution, as well as the impact that the numerous deaths, including her own family, had on her. The novel is a book about survival and enduring even the most difficult hardships. Alicia recalls her escape from Germany and the Nazi’s and her membership into the underground German resistance group, Bricha, which helped Jews to smuggle out of Germany.
The book is now held in 1176 libraries and has been translated into French, German, Danish, Swedish and Spanish. A sequel to the book was also released, Alicia: My Story Continues: A Journey in Historical Photographs.
Alicia has also been recognized for her courage and bravery by various organizations, including the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. She has also been honored with the Merit of Honor from the Israeli Government, and in 2006 she was presented with the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Alicia's story has also been featured in numerous documentaries and other media, including the feature film, The Courage of Alicia Appleman-Jurman.
