Along the River Characters

Along the River Character List

Mei Lan

Mei Lan's mother died in childbirth, so she was naturally orphaned. She has a passion for literature, along with showing defiance towards her family. This on several occasions, like when she refused to have her feet bound or for her to be married. In fact, Mei Lan (towards the end of the story) was looking into becoming a Buddhist nun rather than marrying.

Gege

Gege contradicts the structure to treat Ah Zhao with less familiarity by asking Ah Zhao to call him big brother, and Mei Lan little sister. Gege sees them both as family, even though they are different in some ways.

Ah Li / Ah Zhao

Ah Zhao is creative and talented, which can be shown through many times in the story where he outperforms others. For example, his first attempt at calligraphy is better than the others'. Ah Zhao is also ambidextrous (can use both hands the same) and has been even described as a genius (by Gege) and handsome (by Mei Lan). His talent and artistic skills have also been shown when he was asked to create art for the Emperor.

Niang

Niang is similar to the traditional Cinderella's stepmother. In fact, in the novel, she mistreats CC with physical harm, such as pinching and slapping CC. In addition, Niang calls CC disobedient, lazy, ugly, and unruly. However, she may have treated Mei Lan with her best interest at heart.

Grandma Wu

Grandma Wu throughout the story shows intelligence, serenity, equilibrium, and quiet strength. Grandma Wu is admired by Dr. Allen for these characteristics. She would stay at CC's side throughout her recovery.
