Amnesty: A Novel Literary Elements

Genre

Novel

Setting and Context

The action takes place over the course of a few weeks in an unnamed name in America.

Narrator and Point of View

The story is told from the perspective of a third-person objective point of view.

Tone and Mood

The tone and mood are neutral.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The protagonist is Danny and the antagonist is the murderer who puts Danny in an uncomfortable situation.

Major Conflict

The major conflict is an internal one is the result of Danny's desire to do what is right and the desire to remain by his girlfriend's side.

Climax

The story reaches the climax when Danny goes to the police to point out who the murderer is even though he knows that he risks being deported.

Foreshadowing

The death of the young woman is foreshadowed by the description of the gun sound presented at the beginning of the novel.

Understatement

At the begining of the story, the narrator claims that Danny shares everything with his girlfriend. This is proven to be an understatement when the narrator reveals that Danny's girlfriend does not know that the man she lives with is an illegal immigrant.

Allusions

One of the main allusions we find in the novel is the idea that the American society does not give immigrants, be they legal or illegal any chance of succeeding in the new country.

Imagery

One of the most important images in the novel is that of the mangled body of the woman Danny found in the ditch. This image is an important one because it portrays the dangers of the society in which Danny lived in.

Paradox

N/A

Parallelism

A parallel is drawn between Danny and the immigrants he sees on his way to work. Those people are presented as being involved in all kinds of illegal activities and refusing to do any type of work. This parallel is an important one because it has the purpose of transmitting the idea that being a hard worker is more important than anything else.

Metonymy and Synecdoche

The heavy traffic is used here as a general term to make reference to the idea o violence caused by the presence of a large concentration of people.

Personification

We have a personification in the line"the machines got silent all at once".
