Advanced Technology
As humans progress and their technology advances, they have typically become more progressive and more accepting throughout history. However, despite possessing tremendously advanced technology, the people aboard the ship are regressive, less accepting, and racist.
Monster
Aster is called a monster and an ogre because of her skin color. However, Aster is a valued and productive member of the society on the ship and looks and acts nothing like a monster.
Racism
The light-skinned members of the ship harbor racist attitudes towards dark-skinned members of the ship. However, the dark-skinned members of the ship are responsible for feeding them and ensuring that they live in as good of a place as they could. Without the dark-skinned people, the light-skinned people would die, making their actions ironic and nonsensical.
Generation Ship
The generation ship, which was designed to save humanity, is being used in a way opposite of its design. Instead of saving humanity, the generation ship was being used in a way to oppress and to ultimately harm and kill humans.
The Sovereign
The Sovereign, who is the highest-ranking and most widely respected member of the ship, was deeply involved in the lives of Aster and her mother, who lived on the lower decks and would normally be of no concern to him. The Sovereign was a member of the upper social strata, all of whom would not be caught with members of the lower decks.
