Breq is one of the protagonists in the book. After the defragmentation of the One Esk, Breq became self-aware and fully conscious of her actions. With the power to deliver her own judgment, Breq seeks to avenge the death of her captain, Awn.

Vendaai worked with Breq a thousand years before she got frozen. After spending a millennium in an induced coma, Vendaai wakes up and finds a new world order. Her family is dead, and the Radchaai Empire has entered a peace treaty with the alien Presger Empire. Haunted by nightmares of his past and current reality, Vendaai has become a drunk.
