About the Author

Andrew Marvell was a 17th century English metaphysical poet and an infrequent member of the English Parliament’s House of Commons. Marvell was known as a strong supporter of Republican ideals during the English Revolution of 1649.

Andrew Marvell was born in 1621 in Winestead-in-Holderness, East Riding, Yorkshire, to a clergyman father also named Andrew Marvell. The younger Marvell matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, when he was 13 years old. During this time, Mavell briefly converted to Catholicism and moved to London, but, at the urging of his father, he returned to Cambridge and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree.
