Annabel Background

Annabel Background

Kathleen Winter is a novelist and short story writer who was born in 1960 in the north of England. One of her most prominent works, Annabel, was published in 2010 and is regarded as a daring and pathbreaking novel.

This novel was published by House of Anansi Press and chronicles the birth and life of an intersex child who is born in 1968, a time when no one really understood what that was. It traces the maturation of the protagonist and lends a voice to a marginalized comminty.

According to the Grove Atlantic web site, “Kathleen Winter has crafted a literary gem about the urge to unveil mysterious truth in a culture that shuns contradiction." She has created a seminal work of a wildly transgressive nature, questioning and challenging the mainstream dogmas about the prevalence of a community that isn’t accepted in some branches of society.
