    Cummings in Poetic Movements

    Research

    Objective:

    Students will be able to understand the poetic context in which Cummings worked

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.7; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.8; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.2

    Structure:

    Divide students into three groups. Assign each group to research one of the following:

    • Literary Modernism
    • Imagism in poetry
    • Avant-garde poetry


    They should create brief presentations that define their assigned poetic movement; give some examples of poets besides E.E. Cummings who were part of it; analyze a mentor text by a poet other than E.E. Cummings as an exemplar, using the characteristics of that "school";...
