Why Davidson?


I fell in love with Davidson the moment I stepped onto the campus.

It was the fall of my junior year; back home in New Hampshire the trees had been stripped of leaves, the ground was frozen, and people were walking around bundled in enough clothes to go on an Arctic expedition, hunched against the biting wind that rudely announced the coming of winter. In Davidson, the leaves were just turning the perfect shade of orange, it was sunny without a speck of cloud in the sky, and our tour guide (who, being from Seattle, was no stranger to bad weather) casually remarked that she found the weather to be “A little on the chilly side” (it was 78).

The first thing I noticed on the tour was the balconies of the Eu and Phil halls, where our tour guide said the college Democrats and Republicans debated every four years. The idea reminded me of the Lincoln-Douglass debates, and seemed emblematic of Davidson’s commitment to honest, probing academic debate, which is a huge draw to me. Not to mention, I can definitely see myself standing on one of those balconies during 2020 family weekend. My love for Davidson only deepened as the tour went on.
