What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?


Teaching myself how to play music has illuminated my greatest skills: being a didactic learner and a divergent thinker. I have been involved in music my whole life, fiddling with any instrument I could get my hands on. I currently own three guitars, a cuatro puertorriqueno, a keyboard, and an accordion. While my accordion spends most of its life in my closet, I could pick it up at any time and quickly learn Hot Cross Buns. I am aware of my passion to identify, recreate and use patterns, tone and rhythm to learn new instruments and I apply this skill not only musically but academically. For example, during my junior year, when my AP computer science class wasn't giving me the education I wanted, I used my own time to introduce myself to various coding languages and programs.

Additionally, when I play music, I don't just hear it, I also visualize it. Looking at the keys of a piano or frets of a guitar I see a blank canvas and chords as the patterns to draw. There are many common patterns in popular songs, so when I am composing music, I challenge myself and do my best to stay away from those patterns and create new, unheard ones, thus, improving and refining my skills, and demonstrating my want to stand out.
