Day 1

Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

At the start of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle explains his goal to seek out the highest good, insisting that this is a universal desire that relates to every situation. How do you define the highest good? In your experience, does everyone have the same highest good? Do you agree that the highest good should always be pursued?

Most students will agree with the idea that the highest good should be pursued. However, they should also keep in mind that all people do not agree on what the highest good is. That acknowledgment should lead to a discussion about the assumptions Aristotle is making about the highest good, which may or may not in fact be good for everyone.
