Madeline has a superior attitude and believes others are beneath her. She does not have kindness for others. Leora is a nurse who cares for others no matter their position in life. She and Martin are more suited for one another and he chooses Leorna because of this. He loves her attitude and how she cares for others.

Why is Martin unhappy with being a physician?
Martin prefers scientific research over being a physician. Being a doctor offers him more money but does not make him feel fulfilled as a person. His personal happiness is more important to him than money. He does not like the greed in the medical industry.

Why does Martin leave Joyce Lanyon and their family?
Martin has struggles with wealth. He does not like how wealth affects how people react to one another and how greed affects how businesses are run. He wants to be able to do research without the pressure of big business worrying how they will make a big payday from it. He just wants to help those who are sick no matter how affluent they are.
