At Fault Metaphors and Similes

Metaphor for truth

The forest is an important place for many of the characters in the book. They often go there when they need to take an important decision and most of the women in the play find about the intentions of the men in their lived in the woods. The woods are a natural place where most of the characters feel at ease. The woods also become a metaphor for the truth because it is here where most of them find what they want from life.

Like a battery

In the sixth chapter, Hosmer decides to confess his feelings to Mrs. Lafirme. When Hosmer took her hand into his, he described the feeling as putting his hand on a battery, feeling electricity entering through him and making him feel alive. This comparison is used here to show just how much Hosmer loved Mrs. Lafirme and how attracted he felt to her.

The new room

After Hosmer finally confesses his feelings to Mrs. Lafirme, he is rejected by her because she is not happy with the way he dealt with his former wife. Hosmer tries to get closer to Mrs. Lafirme either way but when things are going the way he wants the, a bell rings and the moment is ruined. The bell is compared with a bell calling souls to hell, thus emphasizing how much Hosmer wanted to be even closer to Mrs. Lafirme.

Like a medicine

Melicent is loved by her suitor, Grégoire, who would do anything to make her happy. Grégoire does everything he can to be near Melicent and shower her with attention and love. When the two talk about the possibility of being one day apart from one another, Grégoire acts scared, telling Melicent he does not wish for something like that to happen. To make Grégoire feel better, she compares the happy memories they had until them with a medicine he will able to take should they be apart. Thus, the happy memories are described here as having a beneficial effect on someone who is apart from the person they love.
