Ian McEwan was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, in southern England in 1948. McEwan's father was in the Army during WWII and was part of the Dunkirk retreat, in which Robbie Turner participates in Atonement. For the first ten years of his life McEwan moved according to his father's postings. He attended Woolverstone Hall, a boarding school in Suffolk where students came from mixed class backgrounds, and completed his undergraduate studies at Sussex University. In 1971 McEwan received his master's degree in Modern Fiction and Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia.
