Bernardine Anne Mobolaji Evaristo is a British author, advocate, and academic. She is the fourth of eight children of a mother of English descent and a father of Nigerian descent, and was raised in Woolwich, southeast London. In 1982, Evaristo graduated from the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama. She later went on to receive a doctorate in creative writing at Goldsmiths College.
Evaristo's education in drama and creative writing has informed her literary, dramatic, and advocacy work. She has held various roles in theater advocacy groups, and written multiple acclaimed novels and plays. Her work has been heavily awarded, and in particular, the 2019 novel Girl, Woman, Other launched Evaristo into the literary spotlight when it won the Booker Prize along with Margaret Atwood's The Testaments.
