Biography of
Daniel Keyes
American writer Daniel Keyes worked as a ship’s purser for the US Maritime Service when he was 17, and later obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Brooklyn College as well as a Master’s in English and American Literature. He worked as an editor for comic book publishers and pulp magazines in the 1950s, and also put out original stories. After the success of Flowers for Algernon, Keyes continued on to teach creative writing in various universities. Flowers for Algernon is his best-known book, and has never gone out of print. He has published four other novels, and three nonfiction books.
Flowers for Algernon was originally published as a short story in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. It won the Hugo Award for Best Short Fiction, the highest prize for a short story in the science fiction field. Keyes says that the...
