Maurice Bernard Sendak was an American artist and writer who became famous for his illustrated children's books. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland who were haunted by the loss of family in the Holocaust. Sendak received formal artistic training at the Arts Student League of New York, and in the early 1950s began his career illustrating children's books. He went on to illustrate more than 80 children's books written by other authors. Starting with Kenny's Window in 1956, he also began writing stories to go with his illustrations. Sendak also worked in other genres, collaborating on and designing television shows, operas, theatre, and ballet. In 1996, he won the National Medal for the Arts.
Sendak lived with his partner, Eugene Glynn, for decades, and continued to write and illustrate stories until his death in 2012.
