Stephen Daldry is an English director and producer. He has directed both films and theater and been nominated for many awards throughout his career. His most famous films include Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
Daldry was born in Dorset and took an early interest in theater, appearing in plays as a young man, before studying English at university. Billy Elliot was his first film, released in 2000 to great acclaim. For his direction, he was nominated for an Academy Award. He next directed The Hours, an adaptation of the novel by Michael Cunningham starring Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore. The Reader, starring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet, earned him his third Academy Award nomination.
