Soap opera
The reason that the terrorist broke into the vice-president's home was to take hostage the president of the country. While many officials and political figures were present, the president was not and the reason given for his absence is both comic and ironic: the president declined the invitation to attend the party because he wanted to see a soap opera on the television.
Take a nap
The group of terrorists that took over the vice-president’s house have different ages, ranging from children to grown-ups. After the first night, one of the priests in the house suggests that maybe the children should take a nap and rest themselves. The situation is ironical, considering the fact that the children were armed and could have killed everyone in the room at any given time.
Short man
The vice-president is a peculiar man in the idea that he was not born rich but rather gained his wealth and influence through his intelligence. He reached the peak of his career when he was chosen to be vice-president of the country by the current president. The reason why he was chosen to be vice-president is ironic because it has nothing to do with his qualities but rather with his height. Apparently, the vice-president was the only candidate to not be taller than the actual president and that constituted the reason why he was chosen and not someone else.
Not for you to control
The general feeling that is present from the beginning is that the terrorists are not really the ones in control but rather the captives are the ones who have the power. This is ironical considering how the terrorists are preventing the captives from escaping yet are unable to control their actions inside the house. For example, when the General tries to stop Messner from coming into the house with new music sheets, Coss threatens him that she will stop singing if Messner is not let into the house. The General in this situation is the one who feels powerless before her, even though he is the one keeping her hostage and has no other choice than to give in to her request.
Ignoring the facts
After a few months, rumors regarding efforts put to save the hostages began to appear. The hostages heard the army planned to dig a tunnel to get to them. Ironically, the people who thought the tunnel was an impractical idea were not the terrorists but actually the hostages who even though the idea was a joke.
