Bewilderment Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Death as a symbol of misfortune

Before the death of Alyssa, the family lived happily, and Robin's condition was not a big issue. However, when Alyssa dies, Theo Byrne is left wondering how to care for his nine-year-old son. The grief that the family is left with cannot be described in words. Therefore, death symbolizes bad lack and possible challenges in the family.

The school

The school where Robin studies symbolize inhumanity. Despite Robin being a troublesome student due to his mental condition, expelling him from school was not the solution. After expelling Robin, the school recommends that his father take him to psychotherapy. After that, the school does not make any follow up.

The symbolism of artificial intelligence

The artificial intelligence implanted in neural imaging to aid Robin in modifying his behavior symbolizes the possibilities of technology. The reader realizes that technology can alter human behaviour. Towards the end of the story, Robin's behavior is influenced to resemble that of his mother, and he ends up becoming an activist.

The symbolism of the future world

The novel is set in the future, which symbolizes the current political upheavals, wars, and climate manipulation. The author tactically reminds readers that it is their responsibility to ensure stability, peace and a sustainable climate.
