What is edan?

Generally, in the world of Binti (and the Binti series as a whole), edan is some sort of electronic device that cannot be successfully used because of its age. Specifically, though, Binti's edan - which she wasn't able to use for much of her life - suddenly allows her to communicate with the Meduse, an alien race that looks like translucent jellyfish.

What are the Meduse?

The Meduse are an alien race in the Binti universe. They are large and look like translucent jellyfish. They are unique creatures who are feared across the galaxy because of their bloodthirst and their gruesome methods of killing people, called moojh-ha ki-bira. Because of this, they are in conflict with the Khoush along with Oomza University (among many other people and institutions).

However, the Meduse are also an incredibly intelligent people. They are incredibly rational and a very honorable people capable of doing good things.

What is Otjize?

Otjize is a kind of mixed clay that is from the soil of Binti's homeland. Initially unknown to Binti, Otjize has profound healing powers, especially when applied to the tentacles of the Meduse. The substance is also used as a way for people across the galaxy to protect themselves against the sun.

According to the book, Binti's use of Otjize represents "animist spirituality that radically decenters human exceptionality while simultaneously imbricating people thoroughly with their material world."
