Wasichu

Wasichu is a word used by the Lakota to describe "white people." It also means something incomprehensible.

Sioux

A grouping of Native American tribes. The Lakota are the westernmost Sioux tribe.

Ogalala

One of the seven tribes that make up the Lakota community.

Lament

Lamenting is a type of prayer meant to ask the gods for a vision. The lamenter must first seek the blessings of a medicine man before secluding himself for the sacred ritual.

Hunkpapa

Hunkpapa is also one of the seven tribes that make up the Lakota people.

Heyoka

A Heyoka is a sacred entertainer. In the Lakota culture, the Heyoka bears sacred powers which he showcases in front of a crowd as a form of entertainment.

Ghost Dance

This is a sacred Indian dance that is believed to harness the spiritual powers of the dead. Indians also believe that the dance grants them a safe voyage into the afterlife.
