The Streak (metaphor)
The Streak is called the period of 6 years of incredible wins – eighty-four wins in a row: “Then in 1964 The Streak began, with perfect seasons for the rest of that decade and into the next… in 1970, Messina lost to South Wayne in the state championship, and The Streak was over”. Even after so many years have passed the victorious “Streak” is still remembered, as this period made Eddie Rake a legend.
The Drought (metaphor)
Another period of games – only seven years - is called metaphorically “drought”. This period was specific in one thing – “Messina went undefeated each season, easily won its conference and playoffs, only to lose in the state finals.” The finals segment always was a crucial one, and Messina during the “drought” has lost each time in the finals.
A city of significance (metaphor)
Neely says: “No wonder they worship Rake. He put the town on the map.” Messina has become famous, and there are two reasons for that: the excellent and victorious football team, and the coach – Eddie Rake. Eddie Rake’s talent has made the city important with the success of the Spartans.
