Blended Irony

Situational Irony

Imani and Izzy have no intention of shoplifting when they go to the high-end dress shop to check the available dresses and the latest fashions. Izzy wants to buy a dress for her recital piano performance that is approaching soon. Despite being Black, Izzy and Imani come from privileged backgrounds because their parents have well-paying jobs. Ironically, the high-end dress shop guard judges the girls based on their skin color and chases them away, arguing that they are thieves. The paradox in this context is that some white people believe Blacks are poor and cannot afford anything they want.

The irony of Izzy’s parents

Izzy's parents are paradoxical characters. Izzy's mother is a white woman, and the father is a Black man. After the parents' divorce, they all remarry in quick succession. The irony is that Izzy's divorced parents compete to have wedding ceremonies with their new partners on the same day and time. The decision of Izzy's parents to have weddings on the same day and time puts Izzy in an awkward situation because they expect her to attend. Izzy decides not to attend and instead concentrates on her piano sessions.

Dramatic irony

There is a dramatic irony when the police arrest Darren and accuse him of robbing a bank. The narrator hints to readers that the person who robbed the bank is a white man. However, the police are unaware, and when they see Darren (a Black man) parking his car next to the bank, they arrest him and instantly charge him with bank robbery.
