What do you think is the significance of the dedication of the book? How does it set the tone for the coming chapters?
Students should be able to discuss the historical time period of the Great Depression and the sense of hope that Phoebe Hurty gave the author. The dedication is also significant because we find out that the speaker of the novel is going to be tongue-in-cheek and irreverent, thus giving us a hint of the novel's tone.
