The director of the film Brokeback Mountain is the Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee; he received numerous awards for his role in creating and directing the film. Initially, Lee wanted to make the film and independent one but he eventually partnered with Focus Features for the film. Lee wanted to make Brokeback Mountain his last directed film but he admitted that after he finished it, he felt as if his passion for film-making was rekindled.
Lee tried to keep the storyline as close as the one in the original short story and the author of the short story praised Lee for his efforts. While Lee did not change much story-wise, his influence is visible when one analyzes how he chose to portray the major characters and the connection between them. In fact, the film is not a story about homosexuality but rather a story about two men who connect spiritually, physically and mentally in ways they are unable to connect with other people.
Throughout Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee humanizes the characters and presents them in such a way that it makes the viewer feels included in the storyline and in the main events. This way of presenting the main characters is used by Lee in others films as well and is also what makes him an outstanding director.
