What real-life event is Calico Joe based on?
This novel is inspired by the story of Ray Chapman, who was fatally hit on the head during a match in 1920. He is the only professional baseball player to die during a major league game. The plot of Calico Joe and the fate of player Joe Castle bears some similarities to the story of Ray Chapman, but Castle lives after his accident.

What changes Paul's opinion about his father?
After years of estrangement, Paul learns that his father has been diagnosed with cancer. This changes things for Paul, as he realizes he only has a small amount of time to make amends. As such, Paul leaves past resentments behind in order to reconcile with his father.

Does Warren take accountability for what happened to Joe Castle?
At first, when Paul visits Warren he denies any responsibility, saying he accidentally hit Joe Castle and therefore does not need forgiveness. However, after some thought, he decides that he would like to see Joe, and arranges a meeting. There, he acknowledges his deliberate attack on Joe and apologizes.
