Immigration

The reasons which make people leave places they know from early childhood and move to a different country are plentiful. More often than not it is a wish for changes for better. However, immigration can’t help if a person has his or her own inner conflicts, doubts, and if he or she starts idealizing his or her new country to the point of believing that there is such a place as the Golden Land. David’s father, Albert, is so bitter about his previous life that he wants to forget everything about it that he starts losing an ability to think critically. The more time passes the more he notices that his life in America resembles his life in Europe. Albert’s story proves the fact that immigration is not an easy way and one is supposed to be both emotionally and physically ready to do it in order not to break down.

Loneliness

One could easily assume that neither David nor his father and mother are really lonely, for they have each other. However, they are. A long period of separation teaches them how to live without each other and now they have to start all over again. Easier said than done, for a new surrounding, crash of old hopes, lack of work and a lot of other old problems they used to face daily in the Old World prevent them from finding a common language.

Self- identification

David comes to the United States at an early age, so he couldn’t identify himself as a proper European, for he remembers almost nothing about the country where he used to live. His family also doesn’t dwell on his origin, so David is left to think about it on his own. Not only David, but his father, Albert, starts facing the same problem, for he tries to adapt to a new country and its customs too much.

Family and absence of mutual trust within it

Due to a long period of separation, David’s family almost starts falling apart. Albert, who suspects that Genya had an affair, can’t get rid of these ideas and, consequently, they start affect their relationship. Not only Genya , David also evokes suspicions. Lack of trust from Albert’s side frightens David, who can’t put his fingers on a reason of his father’s displeasure.
