How did Elio’s father feel about Elio’s relationship with Oliver? How do his sentiments relate to the major themes of the novel?
Elio’s father thought what the two of them had was rare, special, and beautiful. He thought Oliver was good, that Elio was good, and that they were lucky to have found each other. He doesn’t wish it would go away: he envies it and he wants Elio to cultivate his feelings. These feelings of Elio's father reinforce the notion that many people have similar unspoken beliefs and desires, and that they would probably feel better about these beliefs and desires if they could only share them with the people in their lives who care about them.
