Domesticity and community are two significant themes in Cannery Row, and in today's reading, we see two examples of characters taking a functional shelter and turning it into a home. Specifically, Mack and the boys become increasingly committed to decorating the Palace Flophouse, and the Malloys turn an abandoned boiler into as nice a place to live as possible, given that it is still a boiler.
