Case Study Irony

Case Study Irony

The illogicality of the anonymous narrator

The unnamed narrator is a young woman interested in investigating the death of her sister, Veronica. The unnamed narrator came across a description of Braithwaite's experience with his patients; she was certain he caused the death of Veronica. The narrator is shy and not ambitious. Ironically, when she decides to disguise herself as Rebecca to meet Dr. Braithwaite, she looks sharp, confident, and self-assured. Her main role was to investigate Dr. Braithwaite to clear her suspicions.

Dr. Braithwaite

Dr. Braithwaite is a famous and charismatic psychotherapist who positions himself as competent and experienced in his field of operation. Ironically, the revelations of the unnamed author after conducting a fact check about Dr. Braithwaite are shocking. Dr. Braithwaite is inexperienced and handles his patients casually. The unnamed narrator concurs with the narrator's notes about her findings when she disguises herself as a client.

Veronica’s suicide

Veronica is introduced as self-assured, luminous, and a graduate of Cambridge who faces life with confidence. Veronica's sister, the unnamed narrator, describes her as a "daddy's girl" because she got all the attention and support needed to make life's right decisions. Ironically, Veronica's decision to throw herself off the bridge remains an irony that is not uncovered until the novel's end. Veronica had all that she needed in life, and nobody expected her to make drastic decisions that ended her life abruptly.
