Widely considered one of the greatest short story writers of the twentieth century, Raymond Carver was born in an Oregon logging town in 1938. An early father, Carver was married to his first wife, Maryann, and had two children before he turned twenty. Carver and his wife moved around a great deal; and the couple struggled with his alcoholism, among other things. In 1976, he published his first book, Will You Please Be Quiet Please?, working with editor Gordon Lish. In 1977, Carver took his last drink.
