Ibeji is a barren desert outpost where laborers regularly die from thirst. However, the arena is flooded with water so that the stocks can battle to the death on boats for the entertainment of nobles.

Inan's majacite pawn (Situational Irony)

Inan carries a sênet pawn that he clutches when he feels powerless. The pawn reminds him of his duties as the prince. However, Zélie reveals that the pawn is made of majacite, which stifles Inan's abilities.

Inan is a maji (Situational Irony)

King Saran raised Inan to hate and fear maji. However, Inan realizes that he himself is a Connector, a maji with the power to influence minds, dreams, and spirits. Inan uses this magic to track down Zélie with the intent to destroy magic.

Zélie loses her magic (Situational Irony)

Chosen by the gods and goddesses, Zélie is the only person who can restore magic through the ritual on Zaria island. However, after Saran tortures her, Zélie loses her connection to magic.
