Chocolat Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Pantoufle (Symbol)

The imaginary rabbit stands here as a symbol of Anouk’s fear of loneliness, of some kind of aloofness. In such a way the girl shows her emotions, her wishes. As she finds more friends in the town, more rarely does the rabbit “come” to her.

Chocolate (Symbol)

Chocolate symbolizes here the inner world of Vianne, her intentions, her treatment of others. She makes chocolate goodies with all her love; she generously gives them to everybody, often not taking money for them. Her shop is her soul, where she is glad to invite guests, support. and sympathize with them, be happy for their good moments.

Magic mixed with reality (Motif)

The plot of the story combines two atmospheres, which interlace and coexist with each other so closely that the reader sometimes doesn’t distinguish where is the certain reality and where is the imaginary worlds of the characters. Sometimes the protagonists describe completely common events, some kind of routine. But sometimes this routine is intertwined with the heroes’ delirium, with streams of consciousness, which are inspired by the bygone images and memories.
