Why does Paul begin to question his faith?

Paul begins to question his faith after the Catholic Church failed to help him and his family. After his father died in an accident at work, Paul was forced to provide for his family, leading to a lot of financial struggle. He then asks his church for some help but is turned away, and shortly after begins to question his religious faith.

  2. 2

What major historical event makes Paul's circumstances worse?

Paul and his family are struggling financially when the Great Depression transpired. This major event caused worldwide economic hardship, taking place in the 1930s. As well as impacting the economy tremendously, this event also impacted many individual families, which is represented by Paul and his family in this text.

  3. 3

What is the role of capitalism in this book?

As well as exploring the nature of Catholicism, this book also explores the nature of capitalism. Throughout the book, we see that Paul and his family are not supported by either system and essentially fall through the cracks. They are left to fend for themselves, even after the sole provider of the family is killed in an accident. This leads Paul to question his faith and eventually leave Catholicism. He doesn't question capitalism as much, and instead sees it as a better option for helping his family.
