    When Rankine says “the world,” she is likely referring to the dominant culture in the United States. The use of the words “the world” is important. It implies that the dominant culture, and by extension white privilege, is so pervasive and all-consuming that it is the world. Some students may respond simply that she is referring to “white people,” and these students would not be entirely wrong. “The world” is the white world because white culture is the norm and white privilege is at the core of Citizen’s critique.
