Closely Watched Trains Irony

Hypnotism

Milios' grandfather was a hypnotist. Ironically, when the German army came to invade he stood before a tank and soldiers in order to stop them with his mind. The tank did stop, but started up again and drove right over the man's head, killing him.

Full Pension

Milos' great-grandfather received a full pension after being injured in the war. He was paid every day, but ironically would go down to the working men and yell at them about his not having to work. That is until he went to stonecutters and they beat him to death. It wasn't enough to have the money, he had to tell everyone about it as well.

A Trap

The German intellligence officer goes over where the enemy is placing itself saying that it is a trap. Ironically, we see a woman rubbing a pencil on her breasts as they stare at her just as he speaks of a trap. Menzel is using the irony of the soldiers walking into traps to match men walking into the traps of a woman.

Station Master

Max the station master tells Milos not to hang around Hubicka because he only pays attention to the women and has missed opportunities at promotions because of it. Ironically, we see Max flirt with a woman who is not his wife shortly after this statement, showing us that his advice is only for others to abide by.

Sodom and Gomorrah

Max is seen eating his soup near his wife when he hears the woman with Hubicka laughing constantly. He yells at them that they are immoral like Sogom and Gomorrah. Yet, ironically it took his wife hounding him for him to come up the stairs for dinner in order to leave the woman he was attempting to flirt with.
