Why is Bruce Norris so focused on the evils of racism in the play Clybourne Park?

The author is showing the viewer that racism in America is not a new concept but it is something that has existed for many years. His main focus is showing how bad prejudice is in American society. For instance, Karl is depicted as the most bigoted character in the play. He is seen pleading with Bev and Russ to stay put because if they leave, a black family will come to occupy their house. Karl continues to make racist jokes that are intolerant and abusive to Bev, Russ, and their house help, Francine who are all black Americans. The other intolerant white man in the play is Steve who is discriminating against Kevin and Lena and treating them rudely because they decided to purchase a house in the neighborhood. Largely, the whites in this community do not want black Americans to continue leaving here and that is why they want them to move out for good.

What makes Bev and Russ prefer insistence rather than separation after the death of their son, Kenneth?

The death of Kenneth is a bitter pill to swallow for Bev and Russ. After the death of their son, their relationship starts to break away because of the grief they are going through. However, Bev and Russ resolve to continue being together despite their love for each other diminishing. The couple realizes that they are not to blame for Kenneth's death because he took his own life. Therefore, the couple decides to prefer insistence rather than separation to ensure that they defeat the threat of separation in their relationship.

What is the irony of Kenneth’s death?

Kenneth is depicted as a devoted and determined soldier who puts the interest of his country first. When he is sent to a war mission in Korea, he does everything possible to protect the interest of America. However, after returning home, Kenneth is accused of killing of innocent civilians during his mission. Ironically, the very people he swore to protect are the same people prosecuting him. Additionally, it is satirical his white neighbors discredit the black Americans who go to war to protect America and its citizens. Since Kenneth cannot take all this false accusation against him, he decides to commit suicide
