Das Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei – the great collaborative work of Marx and Engels – is in its essence the propagandistic synopsis of the communist ideology as it stood, prefaced with a detailed and condemning account of human socioeconomic history and the conditions of the contemporary world. Despite its enterprise as a presentation of ideas for change, and indeed, for revolution, the Manifest’s preoccupation with the then-present state of capitalism comprises a significant proportion of the text; and regardless of the efforts of the Manifest and its following, this very same capitalism continues as the primary economic structure to this day. Hence, by recognising the failure of the communist manifesto to impose the fundamental economic changes it strived for, only then can one recognize the importance of the manifesto, for this lies not in its predictions of communism but in its account of capitalism itself.
