Cool Hand Luke Irony

Cool Hand Luke Irony

Petty Crime

Luke is sent into a prison to work on a chain gang with prisoners who've committed murder and manslaughter. Ironically, Luke's crime was cutting the heads off parking meters, yet he is lumped in with a group of men whose crimes are much worse and seen as exactly the same as them.

A Better Job

A new prisoner gives a dollar to an inmate in order to get an easier job on the road that day. Ironically, the inmate knows the boss won't give him the easier job. So he took his money to teach him a lesson and to earn an extra buck for himself.

Somebody Stop This

We see a prisoner say that someone should stop the fight between Dragline and Luke because Luke is getting his head beat in. Ironically, the prisoner that says this doesn't do anything to stop the fight, instead he turns around and completely walks away letting Luke continue to be beat.

Cool Hand

Luke is told by Dragline that his hand in cards is nothing just like he had nothing when he was boxing him earlier. Ironically, Luke says that sometimes nothing is a real cool hand. And from this statement Dragline gives Luke his new nickname, Cool Hand Luke.

Too Fast

Dragline and every other prisoner yell at Luke to slow down while tarring the road, but he won't. He wants to get the job done and has made a competition of who can do it the fastest. Ironically, by working this fast the men complete the job with the sun still up and two hours to go, with the benefit that they don't have to do anything. The time is theirs.
